Anandamine
Endocannabinoid system: regulates mood
Anandamide is part of the endocannabinoid system, along with 2-AG, another similar chemical that is also found in endocannabinoid receptors found throughout the body. Present in all vertebrates, the system is classified as a homeostatic regulator, which means that it works constantly to achieve a state of balance in our bodies and minds.

So it is not surprising that our mood, happiness, fear, anxiety or ability to withstand stress are regulated by the endocannabinoid system, with out-of-control anandamide levels associated with everything from schizophrenia to depression.

The body produces anandamide on demand and then quickly decomposes by the enzyme FAAH (fatty acid hydrolase amide). And scientists have discovered that the inhabitants of nations that take the lead in the barometers of happiness share the same genetic mutation: producers less FAAH enzyme responsible for breaking down anandamide.

Indeed, scientists believe that the best levels of happiness of the inhabitants of these countries are the direct result of having more anandamide in their body. Thus, high levels of anandamide would be linked to feelings of well-being and happiness; and lower levels to depression and anxiety.
